ADULT: Wingspan 14-16mm. A pretty noctuid easily identified by the ornately eye-catching markings. The white dagger-like marking, small tear and the obvious kidney mark are diagnostic. The ground colour is greyish-brown and there is very little variability bewteen specimens. CHRYSALIS: Pupates in a tight cocoon resembling a seed-pod of the larval foodplant. LARVA: Feeds on a variety of Toadflax including Common and Purple. BEHAVIOUR: Attracted to light. HABITAT: Coastal areas especially shingle areas where vegetation is abundant. FLIGHT PERIOD: 2 generations. May to August. STATUS: Restricted to central and south east coasts.
